LFB warns of domestic fires

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) has published data showing domestic fires caused by faulty goods have cost the capital’s economy £118m over the past five years.

The LFB published the data today, less than a fortnight after its detailed investigation found a blaze that ripped through a council tower block in west London was caused by a faulty Indesit tumble dryer subject to a safety notice. The LFB said 2,072 white goods-related fires have been attended by firefighters since 2011. It estimates each domestic fire costs the economy £57,000, once factors such as the cost of the fire service response and damage have been factored in. The LFB in the summer launched a campaign called Total Recalls aimed at making it easier for people to check if their products have been recalled for safety reasons.

The LFB earlier this month reported the findings of a detailed, six-week investigation into a blaze that spread through five floors of a council tower block in Shepherd’s Bush, west London.

The investigation, carried out by investigators, with help from scientific advisors, confirmed LFB’s initial findings that the blaze was caused by a faulty tumble dryer. The fire on 19 August spread over five floors and led to 26 homes being evacuated, with 20 families placed in temporary accommodation.
