Peabody has named Lendlease and Morgan Sindall Group as the potential developers for the Thamesmead Waterfront regeneration scheme

The selected partner will enter a joint venture with Peabody to deliver 11,500 new homes and 1m sq ft of town centre commercial and leisure space on the site.

The scheme is the biggest undertaken by Peabody in its 156-year history, and is among the largest in Europe.

Thamesmead, currently a giant housing estate which has been largely owned by Peabody since 2014, will receive new Crossrail and Docklands Light Railway (DLR) connections in the coming years.

Brendan Sarsfield, chief executive of Peabody, said: “These are really exciting times for Thamesmead. The opening of Crossrail in 2018 and the planned DLR extension from Newham to the town in 2026 will unlock huge growth for this part of London.

“Unrivalled in both scale and space, the Thamesmead Waterfront scheme offers a unique opportunity for Peabody to work with a strategic partner to deliver a new community, benefiting both new and existing residents of Thamesmead for years to come.”

Lendlease was selected by Haringey Council as the partner for its Haringey Development Vehicle regeneration programme, but that project has been left in jeopardy by a wave of political protest and deselections of local councillors.

It previously redeveloped the Heygate Estate in Elephant and Castle.
