Mark Henderson, the long-serving chief executive of Home Group, has announced plans to retire, with a successor expected to be appointed later this year.
Mr Henderson joined the 57,000-home landlord in September 2008 following four years as chief executive of Northumberland County Council.
He is not currently set to take on a new job in the sector and will continue as the boss of Newcastle-based Home Group until a replacement is found.
Home Group, which celebrates its 90th anniversary this year, said it will start looking for a new chief executive imminently.
“Mark will work a significant notice period to enable a smooth and seamless transition to his successor,” the landlord said in a filing.
The housing association added: “There is no change to the Home Group executive team or to its day-to-day leadership and governance arrangements.”
Mr Henderson’s total pay in 2024-25 was £321,031, a rise of nearly a fifth on the previous year, according to Inside Housing’s annual Chief Executive Salary Survey.
Under his tenure, Home Group was named one of the country’s best places to work for seven years in a row.
Mr Henderson currently sits on the board of Homes England. Previously he was chair of Homes for the North and on the board at the National Housing Federation.
Last month, Home Group reported that its pre-tax surplus rose by more than a third despite a drop in turnover.
The housing association currently has G1/V2 grades for governance and financial viability with the English regulator, but has yet to be given a grade under the consumer standards.
Home Group operates across England and Scotland, housing around 125,000 residents.
John Cridland, chair of the board at Home Group, said: “The board and I want to thank Mark for his outstanding leadership and for ensuring a clear, well-planned transition.
“Under his stewardship, Mark has expanded Home Group’s mission to build more homes and provide more services, while creating strong relationships at the highest levels of government and within the sector – all of which have brought significant benefit to the organisation, our customers and our communities.
“We are now working in partnership with an external agency in the search for our next chief executive. In the meantime, it is very much business as usual, and the organisation remains in a strong and stable position.”
