A review of the future of Westminster’s ALMO makes the news, and the rest of the morning’s housing news
In the news
Get West London is reporting that CityWest Homes, Westminster City Council’s housing management ALMO, has been put under review, with Jonathan Cowie, its chief executive, resigning.
In a statement, the council said the review was aimed at enhancing the borough’s residents’ experiences and integrating housing services “more seamlessly”.
“The scope of the review covers all areas from the shape and size of the arms-length management organisation, to how it delivers its core services to residents.”
The issue was a live one in the recent local elections, during which Labour argued that repairs should be brought back in-house.
The Guardian has been following a huge the fire on the moors outside Manchester all through the night, which has seen two schools closed by Tameside Council.
Power has also been cut to 250 properties and firefighters told the newspaper the fire may have spread to over 6km.
Meanwhile, The Guardian has taken a slightly unusual angle on Grenfell this morning, interviewing Rekha Vijayshankar, a health visitor who has led a team working with survivors.
The piece hears how she has helped people work through ongoing trauma after the fire as well as a host of different issues.
The same newspaper has covered a story first run by Inside Housing yesterday afternoon.
While Inside Housing focused on the fact that new government funding had been targeted towards wealthy Conservative-led areas, The Guardian reports that there is also a significant bias towards southern local authorities.
The Construction Index covers a report from the All Party Parliamentary Group for Excellence in the Built Environment, calling on the government to create a New Homes Ombudsman for disputes between home buyers and house builders.
