Council releases map of 1,500 planned homes

Southwark Council has released a map of where it plans to build or convert 1,500 new homes over the next four years.

The homes, which will be spread across the borough, will all be let at traditional social rent (see bottom of story for map). They will either be new-build properties or conversions of previously vacant spaces into council homes, including former community halls, disused rent offices, and laundries.

The first new homes, located in Willow Walk, Bermondsey, are due for completion by March, and will include 75 affordable new homes, of which 21 will be for residents from the council’s housing register, and 54 for households requiring urgent temporary accommodation.

Peter John, leader of the council, said: ‘Our commitment to build 11,000 new council homes across the borough by 2043 is the most ambitious in the country.  I am pleased that we can now announced where the first 1,500 will be which we have committed to getting underway by 2018.

‘Underpinning this decision has been an ongoing consultation with residents to make sure that we are meeting their needs and responding to their concerns.

‘Council housing remains the most genuinely affordable option for many.  This new generation of council homes at some of London’s most competitive rents will mean people across the borough will benefit and have a new place to live that they can be proud to call home.’

These 1,500 are part of the council’s plan to build or convert 11,000 new homes over the next 30 years.
